8A + 3.50C = 54

So multiplies the second equation by 10/5 = 2 will clear the decimals and divide out

the common factor of 5.

 

C = 9 - A

 

16A + 7C = 108

 

 

Substitutes the first equation into the second:

16A + 7( 9 - A) = 108

 

16A + 63 - 7A = 108 <--- distributes

 

9A + 63 = 108 <--- combines like terms

 

9A = 108 - 63 <--- subtracts 63 from both sides

 

9A = 45  <--- solves for A

 

A = 45/9 = 5

 

A = 5 ---> C = 9-5 =  4

 

CHECK:  5 x 8 + 4 x 3.50 = 40 + 14 = 54
