Jay's salary is 2/3 of his wife's salary. In January, when they both get $2000 raises, their combined income will be $49000. What are their current salaries?

wife salary = x

jay salary = (2/3)x

 

After increment

wife salary = x + 2000
jay salary = (2/3)x + 2000

 

x+2000+(2/3)x + 2000 = 49000

x +(2/3)x +4000=49000

x+(2/3)x =45000

5x / 3 =45000

5x = 135000

x = 27000

 

wife salary = x  = $27000
jay salary = (2/3)x = (2/3)* 27000=$18000
