g = acceleration of gravity

v = initial vertical launch speed

t = time elapsed since launch

h(t) = height of projectile as function of time

h₀ = launch height

 

h(t) = -(g/2)t² + vt + h₀

 

If you want to find how long it takes for the projectile to reach a specified height, you have to solve a quadratic equation in time t.  It is a common application.
