Now set up a system of equations.

 

y= 6x +1  (Red beads = 1 more than six times white beads)

 

x+y =50  (Total number of beads)

 

substitute in for y gives

 

x + (6x+1) = 50

7x +1 =50

7x=49

x=7

Substitute x back into the equation for y gives

y = 43 Red beads
