two students compared the number of songs that they each had downloaded from iTunes. the first student's total was five less than twice the second student's total. together they had a total of 985 songs. what is the linear equation that needs to be solved? how many songs does each student have

x = 1st students downloads

y = 2nd students downloads

 

Your system of equations is:

x = 2y - 5

x + y = 985

 

2y-5+y = 985

3y-5 = 985

3y = 990

y = 330 downloads for 2nd student

 

x = 2y-5 = 655 downloads for1st student
