Think about a number line.
The distance from 3 to 9 is 6
Absolute value of a number is it's distance from zero
expressed as a positive number. |2| = 2 and |-2| = 2
Example for a distance situation:
The distance from x to 3 is 6:
|x-3| = 6
So x-3 = 6 or x-3 = -6
x = 9 x = -3
Note that on a number line if we start at 3 and
go 6 spaces right we are at 9. If we start at 3
and go 6 spaces left we are at -3
Your equation is:
|x-9| ≤ 8
