Illogical Modifiers

My teacher gave me a sentence and asked me to rewrite the sentence. The original sentence goes like this:

Smelling burnt and having a blackened crust, I decided to bake another pie for the party.

Which answer is correct here? 

     A) Since the pie smelled burnt and had a blackened crust, I decided to bake another pie for the party. 

Or, B) Smelling the pie burnt with a blackened crust, I decided to bake another pie for the party.

"A" sounds good to me.
