If we look at the change from one number to the next, we get --

 

   100 to 96: -4

   96 to 104: +8

   104 to 88: -16

   88 to 120: +32

   120 to 56: -64

 

The pattern I see is the the change from one value to the next keeps doubling, and changing sign. That is, the change from one value to the next is -2 * the previous change.

 

With this information, can you determine the next change after -64, and then add it to 56 to get the next value ?

Notice the pattern.....the difference between 100 and 96 is 4, so -4

from 96 to 104 is 8, and from 104 to 88 is 16...

 

88 to 120 is 32.  See it?  The difference between consecutive numbers is double from the previous step.

 

From 120 to 56 is 64, and so we add 2x64=128 to 56 to get the next number.  Answer is 184.
