Hi Alaina,
Let the number of adults on the trip be A and the number of children be C.
If 197 people went on the trip, then A + C = 197
The cost for all of the adults is 15A and the cost for all of the children is 5C.
So, 15A + 5C = 1485
If A + C = 197, then A = 197 - C
Substitute this in for A in the second equation:
15A + 5C = 1485
15(197 - C) + 5C = 1485
2955 - 15C + 5C = 1485
2955 - 10C = 1485
-10C = -1470
C = 147
There were 147 children on the trip.
Since A = 197 - C
A = 197 - 147
A = 50
There were 50 adults.
Hope this helps. :)
