Anytime you have different options and each of them is equally likely to happen, you multiply the numbers to see how many different combinations could have been made.

 

5 types of sandwich X 3 styles of potatoes = 15 combinations options.  Each of those 15 options could come 2 ways, either with beans or with Cole slaw.
