If the voltage V in an electric circuit is held constant, the current I is inversely proportional to the resistance R. If the current is 40 amperes when the resistance is 285 ohms, find the current when the resistance is 150 ohms.

V = IR = (40 A)(285 ohms) = 11,400 volts

 

The voltage is constant, so when R = 150 ohms,

 

I = V/R = (11,400 volts) / (150 ohms) = 76 A
