shreya and mary each improved their yards by planting grass sod and 5 geraniums.  They bought their supplies from the same store.  Shreya spent 55.00 on 5 feet of grass sod and 5 geraniums.  Mary spent 79.00 on 5 feet of grass sod and 13 geraniums.  What is the cost of one feet of grass sod and the cost of one geranium?

X = cost of 1 square foot of grass sod and Y = cost of one geranium

 

5X + 5Y = 55 ---> X + Y = 11   --> Y = 11-X

 

5X + 13Y = 79

 

5X + 13(11-x) = 79

 

5x +  143 - 13x = 79

 

-8x + 143 = 79

 

 -8x = -64

 

   x = 8  ---> Y = 11 - 8 = 3

 

check:   5(8) + 5(3) = 40 + 15 = 55

             5(8) + 13(3) = 40 + 39 = 79

 Grass sod costs $8 per square foot while the geraniums are $3 each.
