on the first day of ticket sales the school sold 3 adult tickets and 8 child tickets for 103.00  The school took in 107.00 on the second day by selling 6 adults tickets and 7 child tickets.  What is the price each of one adult ticket and one child ticket?

And now to ticket sales:

 

  X = adult  Y = child

 

 3X + 8Y = 103

 6X + 7Y = 107

 

Let's use elimination method this time. Multiplies the first equation by -2. Then adds them together.

 

 -6X + -16Y = -206

 6X +   7Y   =  107

 

           -9Y =  -99

            Y = 11

 

plugging this into the first equation:

 3X + 8Y = 103

 3X + 8(11) = 103

  3X + 88 = 103

  3X = 15

   X = 5

 

checking using the second equation:

   6(5) + 7(11) = 30 + 77 = 107

 

adult tickets cost $5 and child tickets cost $11.

Why do the adult tickets cost so much less?
