A jet plane makes a trip of 2700 miles with a tail wind and returns over the same route against the same wind. If the plane flies at 570 miles per hour with no wind, and the roundtrip flying time is 9 1/2 hours, find the speed of the wind.

Let x be speed of wind

 

2700/(570 + x) + 2700/(570-x) = 9.5

 

If you do the algebra you will find that the answer is about 26 mph

2700/596 + 2700/544 = 4.96 + 4.54 = 9.5
