Question

In 2006, the population of the country was 32.6 million. This represented an increase in population of 7.5% since 2001. What was the population of the country in 2001? Round to the nearest hundredth of a million.

If we let the population in 2001 be x, then the population in 2006 with 7.5% increase will be 100+7.5 = 107.5% of x.

if      107.5 % x  equals 32.6 million

then  100 % x  equals    ? million

 

cross multiply

100*32.6 / 107.5 

= 30.33 millions
