Notice that the deck adds x at both ends of each dimension.
The outer dimensions of the deck are 40+2x and 30+2x.
The area enclosed by the deck is thus:
(2x+40)(2x+30) = 3696.
Solve for x.
4x2+140x+1200=3696
4x2+140x-2496=0
Simplify (divide both sides by 4)
x2+35x-624=0
(x-13)(x+48)=0
x=13, -48
The negative value for x doesn't make sense. Discard it.
