Let m = the number of math books.
And we know there were 3 times as many physics books as that m up there. Call them 3m.
We know that "m" math books and "3m" physics books added together make 396 total books.
So m + 3m = 396, so
4m = 396, so
m = 396 divided by 4, which equals...
