f(-3)=23, f(2)=-7 find b and m

Question

they're telling me to find find m and b from this but the format doesn't fit that of the f(x)=mx+b, so im very confused, thank you

You can also use the point-slope form of a line to reduce the process.  It uses the slope and any point given.

 

y = mx - mx₁ + y₁      ------->     y = mx + b

 

where:

m = slope

b = -mx₁ + y₁

 

(x₁ , y₁) is any of the given points

f(-3) = 23, this is the same as (-3, 23)

f(2) = -7, this is the same as (2, -7)

Can you determine m from these two?

Then substitute m, and eiether pair in y = mx + b to determine b.
