A theatre contains 482 seats and the ticket prices for a recent ply were $48 for adults and $17 for children . If the total proceeds were $14,084 for a sold out matinee, how many of each type of ticket were sold?

This is exactly like your previous problem and should

be solved in the same manner:

 

a = # adult tickets:

c = # child tickets:

 

a + c = 482

48a + 17c = 14084

 

I would use elimination, as I did on your previous problem.

Multiply equation 1 by -17 and add the equations to

eliminate the c variable. 

 

From that sum, solve for a to get # of adult tickets.

Subtract a from 482 to get # of child tickets.
