Frank has $45.32 more than Susan. Together they have $100. How much money does each person have?

Set up two equations to develop a system of linear equations.

 

Let Frank  = F

Let Susan = S

 

From the problem those equations are as follows:

 

Equation 1.             F = S + 45.32

Equation 2               F + S = 100

 

Substitute Equation 1  into 2.

 

                               ( S + 45.32) + S = 100

                                       2S + 45.32 = 100

                                       2S = 100 -45.32

                                       2S = 54.68

                                         S = 27.34

Susan has $27.34.

Plug that value into either equation 1 or 2.

 

Use equation 2.   F + 27.34 = 100

                          F= 100-27.34
