Alexia;  Let's set up an equation by working backward from Julia's age (J).  Well represent Dave's age as D.

 

4 times Julia's age= 4xJ

8 years less than this = (4xJ)-8

This is equal to Dave's age:  (4xJ)-8=16

 

Isolate J by adding 8 to both sides of the equation and then dividing each side of the equation by 4:

 

4J = 24

 

J = ?
