Fund B: X
Fund A: X-4000
These are the 2 investment amounts
.03X + .07(X-4000) = 1620
Multiply by 100 to get rid of decimals
3X + 7(X-4000) = 162000
Now solve for X (fund B amount)
Once you solve for X , subtract 4000 to solve for fund A amount

Notice how the equation
3X + 7(X-4000) = 162000
Does not have the decimal values of .03 and .07. Multiplying both sides of the equation by 100 was an optional step.
We could have left them as .03 and .07
.03X +.07(X-4000) = 1620
.03X +.07X - 280 = 1620
.10X = 1900
X = 19000
