What number continues the pattern

 

7 16 8 27 9 ?

I suspect the next number is 38 (9+29) due to the +9, -8, +19, -18 progression that seems to be getting established.  More about the series would be nice to known to be more sure. Then again I could give another (weaker) argument for it being either 4^2 or 2^4 due to the progression of the base 2 power (16) and base 3 power (27).

1. The pattern that emerges is that every other number, beginning with 7, is an increase of 1.  And the other two numbers (16, 27) are multiples of the numbers to their right.  But, in a sequence, you don't want to rely on the number to the right, you rely on building the sequence based on the number to the left.
2. Let 7 = x.  Then every other number in the sequence is just incrementing the x value, specifically the position occupied by 8 represents x+1 and the position occupied by 9 is x+2
3. 16 = 2*8, but it also equals 2*(x+1).   Similarly, 27 = 3*9, or 3*(x+2).  Let y = 2.
4. To summarize, the pattern is x, y*(x+1), x+1, (y+1)*(x+2), x+2, ?
5. The ? = (y+2)*(x+3) = (2+2)*(7+3) = 4*10 = 40
6. The next number is 40.

Solving a pattern can be difficult, because it's often a lot of trial and error. Let's look at the numbers and see if we can find a pattern.

 

The first number is 7.

The second number is 16.

How is 16 related to 7?

 

16 is 9 more than 7. But the next number is 8, then 27. So this doesn't seem right.

 

How else is 16 related to 7?

16 is 7 * 2 + 2.

 

The next number is 8.

How is 8 related to 16?

8 is 16 / 2

 

The next number is 27

How is 27 related to 8?

27 is 8 * 3 + 3

 

The next number is 9

How is 9 related to 27?

9 is 27 / 3

 

Therefore, we've found a pattern. 

The numbers come in pairs.

The first number of the pair is always the previous number * n + n

The next number of the pair is always the previous number / n

 

Therefore, the next number is going to be

9 * 4 + 4 = 40

 

The number after that will be

40 / 4 = 10
