- The pattern that emerges is that every other number, beginning with 7, is an increase of 1. And the other two numbers (16, 27) are multiples of the numbers to their right. But, in a sequence, you don't want to rely on the number to the right, you rely on building the sequence based on the number to the left.
- Let 7 = x. Then every other number in the sequence is just incrementing the x value, specifically the position occupied by 8 represents x+1 and the position occupied by 9 is x+2
- 16 = 2*8, but it also equals 2*(x+1). Similarly, 27 = 3*9, or 3*(x+2). Let y = 2.
- To summarize, the pattern is x, y*(x+1), x+1, (y+1)*(x+2), x+2, ?
- The ? = (y+2)*(x+3) = (2+2)*(7+3) = 4*10 = 40
- The next number is 40.
