How can you resist telling the student that F O I L  is the way to multiply two binomials??  It's a general method, and must be inculcated permanently into every Algebra's mind.

Personally, I find trying to explain FOIL needlessly tedious and confusing
to the student.  (a+b)(c+d) = ac + ad + bc + bd is more straight forward.

This is F-O-I-L:
                       First-Outside-Inside-Last
  (a+b)(c+d) = ac   +   ad   +   bc + bd

First = leftmost term in each factor
Outside = far leftmost and far rightmost terms
Inside = internal terms
Last = rightmost term in each factor

Now, PLZ don't think that easy examples are worthless:     (2+3)(4+5) = 2*4+2*5+3*4+3*5
                                                                                   5*9 = 8+10+12+15
                                                                                     45 = 45

F.O.I.L. substitutes memorization for understanding.

(a+b)(c+d) = (c+d)a + (c+d)b = ac + ad + bc + bd    uses distributive rule, which is a fundamental concept

(a+b)(c+d+e) = (c+d+e)a + (c+d+e)b = ac + ad + ae + bc + bd+ be    — again, distributive rule
