Let y = cost of an apple
We have two basic equations from information given:
1) x = 2y orange costs twice as much as an apple
2) 2x = $.72 two oranges cost 72 cents
from 2x = .72
x = .72/2
x = .36
An orange costs 36 cents
Since x=2y
2y = .36
y = .36/2
y = .18
Apples cost 18 cents
