You might want to recheck your factoring.

Michael, if you foil out your factoring you get (-q) - middle yet -7q+6q
this term is positive in your own equation
you may want to check yours.

If you FOIL out my factoring, you get

(4q - 7)(q + 2) =0

4q2 + 8q - 7q - 14 = 0

4q2 + q - 14 = 0

Here is your equation.

(4a + 7)(a - 2) = 0

4a2 - 8a + 7a - 14 = 0

4a2 - a - 14 = 0

This does not match the equation you ended up with.  Your middle term should be +a.  Not -a.

Overall, we have the same equation.  The only difference is that I used q in my substitution as opposed to your a.

But if you don't believe me, try plugging your solution into the original equation.  See if you get a result close to 14.
