twice the difference of a number and 9 is equal to three times the sum of the number and 3. Find the number?

Let's distribute the 2 on the left side, and the 3 on the right side.

2x-18=3x+9

Let's subtract 2x from both sides...

-2x-2x-18=-2x+3x+9

-18=x+9

Let's subtract 9 from both sides...

-9-18=x+9-9

-27=x

Let's check our work...

2(x-9)=3(x+3)

2(-27-9)=3(-27+3)

2(-36)=3(-24)

-72=-72
