John ran the 100-m dash with a time of 9.95 sec. If this pace could be maintained for an entire 26-mi marathon, what would his time be?

Find the speed when distance is 100m and time is 9.95 sec.

 

Speed = 100 m / 9.95 sec

          = 10.05 m/s

 

 

Then convert this speed to the units of mph.  After that, divide the distance by that speed to obtain your time.

 

10.05 m/s = 0.00062 mi / (1/3600 hr)

                = 2.232 mph

 

 

time = 26 m / (2.232 mi/hr)

time = 11.649 hr
