QUES : A group consisting of 25 teachers, 20 engineers , 18 doctors ,and 12 salesmen visited a fair and spent Rs: 1330/- altogether. it was found that 5 teachers spent as much as 4 engineers , 12engineers spent as much as 9 doctors and 6 doctors spent as much as 8 salesmen . if every person in a professional group spent the same amount find the amount spent by each engineer

1) Re-arrange the 1st 3 equations for e.

5t = 4e

t = 4e/5

 

12e = 9d

d = 12e/9 = 4e/3

 

6d=8s

6(4e/3) = 8s

8e = 8s

2) Plug into eq4 and solve for e.

 

25(4e/5) + 20e + 18(4e/3) + 12(e) = 1330

20e + 20e + 24e + 12e = 1330

76e = 1330

e = 17.5

 

3) Solve for the other variables.

 

s = 17.5

 

d = 4(17.5)/3 = 70/3

 

t = 4(17.5)/5 = 14

 

4) Check your answers.

 

25(14) + 20(17.5) + 18(70/3) + 12(17.5) = 1330

350 + 350 + 420 + 210 = 1330

1330 = 1330

 

So each engineer spent $17.50.
