Two high-speed ferries leave at the same time from a city to go to the same island. The first ferry, the Cat, travels at 37 miles per hour. The second ferry, the Bird, travels at 29 miles per hour. In how many hours will the two ferries be 8 miles apart?

This is actually pretty simple. The faster ferry is travelling at 8 mph faster than the slower, so after the first hour, it will have gone 8 miles farther.

 

As far as calculating a more difficult problem, d = rt, right? Since the faster ferry is 8 miles farther than the slower at some point...

 

37t = 29t + 8

8t = 8

t = 1

 

So, in one hour, the ferries will be 8 miles apart!
