One number can be x, and the other number can be y. Then we know the following

 

x + y = 28

 

x - y = 4

 

Adding the two equations together by way of the Elimination Method produces 

 

2x = 32

 

x = 16

 

Now, plug this into either of the two equations above. Let's choose the first. 

 

16 + y = 28

 

y = 12

 

The two numbers are 12 and 16

 

12 + 16 = 28

 

16 - 12 = 4
