a bin contains both us and metric bolts. the number of metric bolts is 7 more than three times the number of us bolts. suppose the total number of bolts in the bin is 215. How many of each type of bolt is there?

Let x = the number of U.S. bolts 3x + 7 = the number of metric bolts

 

We have the following equation x + (3x + 7) = 215

 

4x + 7 = 215

 

4x = 208

 

x = 52

 

There are 52 U.S. bolts and 3x + 7 = 3 * 52 + 7 = 156 + 7 = 163 metric bolts
