Let s = the number of students

then s - 150 = the number of adults

and $3 * s = the amount of money collected from student tickets

and $5 * (s - 150) = the amount of money collected from adult tickets

 

The total money collected = the amount from student tickets plus the amount from adult tickets

 

$4,730 = $3 * s + $5 * (s - 150)

$4,730 = $3 * s + $5 * s - $750

$4,730 = $8 * s - $750

$4,730 + $750 = $8 * s

$5,480 = $8 * s

s = $5,480 / $8

s = 685 students attended the play
