suppose Ben is x years old.

  so Abe would be (x+8) years old

 

4 years ago,

Ben's age = (x-4) years

Abes's age= (x+8)-4 =(x+4) years

Abe was twice Ben's age so

 

(x+4) = 2(x-4)

x+4 = 2x -8

x=12

x+8 =20

Ben is now 12 years old.
