No. of pieces of cake  = x

 Max ate = 3 pieces

Ray ate = 1/4 x

 

So

 

3 + 1/4 x =9  (Equation )

 

if we solved equation we got total number of pieces

 

1/4  x =9-3

 

1/4  x = 6

 

x= 24

So total number of pieces = 24
