Write a linear equation

Al's Lawn Mowing service charges a flat fee of $50 to mow your lawn plus an additional $10 for each acre of grass you want mowed. Write a linear equation to represent the total cost, y, to mow a lawn with x acres of grass.

y = 10x + 50

For each acre of grass you want mow you need to pay $10. For x acres of grass you need to pay $10x. Plus there is a flat fee of $50. Thus your total cost is represented by the following linear equation: 

 

y= 50 + 10x.
