Order 2 pancakes and fruit cup for a total of $11.50. The fruit cup is $1.50. How much for one pancake?

You order two servings of pancakes  a fruit cup.  The cost of a fruit cup is $1.50.  You leave a 15% tip.  Your total bill is $11.50.  How much does one serving of pancakes cost? The textbook solved this word problem by the equation "1.15(2p + 1.5) = 11.5; p = $4.25" I have no idea how they got the "1.15" in the equation.

The answer in the textbook is $4.25.  They use 1.15(2p + 1.5) = 11.5 as an equation to solve this problem.  I just don't understand how they got this equation???

Hi Janet,

I didn't see there was a tax when I answered earlier. That makes a big difference!

Tax is applied on the total cost of the food. The multiplier 1.15 is 100% food cost + 15% tax.

"P" is the unknown cost of one pancake. There are two of them so you multiply P by 2, then add the cost of the fruit cup.

Multiply the whole cost of the 2 pancakes and 1 fruit cup by the tax, set it equal to the price, $11.50 and solve for P.

$11.50 = 1.15(2P + $1.50)

Hi Janet,

I didn't see there was a tip when I answered earlier. That makes a big difference. The multiplier, 1.15 is the total food cost plus tip = 100% + 15%

As an example, say you spend $10 on lunch and give a 15% tip.

A 15% tip on $10 dollars:
0.15($10) = $1.50

So you pay the $10 + $1.50 = $11.50

1.15($10) = $11.50

It's easier, when paying a %more for something to multiply by 100% + additional % instead of calculating the tip, tax, etc. and adding it to the total cost.

Hope this helps!

The equation is derived from the word problem. You're asked to find the cost of one pancake so you assign an unknown variable to it. The "p" is the unknown variable representing the cost of one pancake. There are two pancakes so multiply by 2 and then add the cost of the fruit cup, $1.50 to get the total cost of the food. finally, multiply by the percent increase (100% food cost + 15% tip) and set equal to the amount paid, $11.50. Then you are able to solve for p, the cost of one pancake.
