How far to the bottom?

A hiker climbs a mountain path at the rate of 2 miles per hour. Following the same path down the mountain, the joker has a rate of 4 miles per hour. If the round trip took 3 hours, how far is it from the top to the bottom of the mountain?

Scott B.

Since the hiker took the same path the rate up the mountain multiplied by the time is equal to the rate down the mountain multiplied by the time. It can be expressed mathematically as:

2t = 4(3-t)

since the total time is 3 hours. Then

2t = 12-4t

6t=12

t=2

multiplying the up rate by 2 houts gives a distance of 4 miles. It is verified by the downward rate because the time is 1 hour.
