Finding break point

Question

Suppose one plumber charges $75 to visit your home and 45 dollars an hour to work on your plumbing. Another plumber charges $100 to come out to your home and charges 30 dollars an hour. Find the break point.

h = # hours worked

 

75 + 45h = 100 +30h

15h = 25

h = 5/3 = 1 hour and 40 minutes

Set up the equality as:

x = number of hours, so

   45x + 75 = 30x + 100

          -75  =        -75

  ----------------------------

   45x         = 30x  + 25

  -30x         = -30x

  ----------------------------

   15x         =            25

   ----                       ----

    15                        15

 

     x           =           1 2/3

                            (reduced fraction)

 

In terms of hours, this would be

1 hour and 40 minutes.

The breakeven is not exact, as

it comes within 10 cents.
