Cycle Paths, Inc. makes bicycles, tricycles and unicycles. Last week they made 88 more bicycles than unicycles, and five times as many tricycles as unicycles. if they made 40 more bicycles than tricycles, how many unicycles did they make?

Let B = the number of Bicycles, Let T = the number of tricycles, Let U = the number of Unicycles

 

Therefore the 3 equations are

 

U = B-88

U = T/5

T = B-40

 

Now substitute T in the second equation:

 

U = (B-40)/5

 

and using the first equation substitute for U in the solved equation

 

B-88 = 1/5B-8

 

solving above equation for B

 

You find 4/5B = 80

 

B=100 Bicycles

 

Using the first equation:

 

U=B-88 the number of Unicycles is 12
