there were 63 runners to start a race. in the first half of the race, 1/3 of them dropped out. in the second half of the race, 2/7 of the remaining runners dropped out. how many runners finished the race?

"of" often means multiplication. . . 1/2 of 10 is 5 because (1/2) x 10 = 5.

 

So 1/3 of 63 is (1/3) x 63 which equals 63/3 = 21.  So 63 - 21 = 42 runners continued the race.

 

Now we need to take 2/7 of 42.  I'll let you figure that out.

 

The product is the number of people who dropped out in the second half of the race. 

 

So how will you figure how many runners finished the race?
