solving for a varible

(1-2x)/4-3=(x-3)/2-x  Solve for x

Alissa,  was the 2-x part in what you typed supposed to have parentheses around it by any chance?  That'd make quite a difference in the outcome.  If not, then what Neal showed makes sense, some equations will just have no solutions!

     (1 - 2X) /4 - 3 = (X - 3)/2 -X
 
Multiply all terms by the least common denominator
of all the denominators in the problem:  4
 
          1 - 2X -12 = 2(X - 3) - 4X
 
              -11 -2X = 2X -6 - 4X
 
             -11 - 2X = - 2X - 6
 
            -2X cancel each other
 
                    -11 = -6
 
   False statement: No solution for X
