Under plan B, the inn charges $1900 plus $14 for each person in excess of the first 45 who attend. For what size parties will plan B cost less? (Assume that more than 45 guest will attend.)  Let p represents the number of guest.

Let C = cost, p=#persons attending

A:  C = 30(p)

B:  C = 14(p-45) + 1900

 

We want to know for how many people plan B is less than plan A:

 

14(p-45)+1900 < 30P     multiply thru parenthesis

14p - 630 + 1900 < 30p 

14p+1270<30p              subtract 14p from both sides

1270 < 16p                    divide both sides by 16

79.375 < p

 

Plan B is cheaper for 80 or more people in attendance
