Need a refresher on distance traveled, can't remember the formula.

Question

An aircraft carrier left Diego Garcia and traveled toward Guam at an average speed of 20 km/h. A container ship left at the same time and traveled in the opposite direction with an average speed of 25 km/h. Find the number of hours the container ship needs to travel before the vessels are 360 km apart.

25t = distance traveled by Container

 

Both left Diego Garcia at the same time in opposite directions. How many hours until they are 360 km apart? Solve for t.

20t + 25t = 360

45t = 360

t = 8 hours
