So, Andrea, let's say there are 5 shelves. There would be 11(5) = 55 books, right?
Instead, x is an unknown number of shelves. There are 11(x) books, which we write as 11x.
To take this a little further, we can then either say x = any number, so how many books are there given that number.
If x = 7, how many books are there? 11(7) = 77 total books.
Ooooorrr...
We can say there are a total number of books, so what is the value of x, the number of shelves?
There are 77 total books, so what is the value of x? 11x = 77, so x = 7.
Hope this helps!

But how did you get the total for how many books on the selves? Because it only tells you how many selves there are not how many books.

Lacey, I made those up. If there are 11 books on each shelf, then the total number of books will be a multiple of 11, right? One shelf will have a total of 11 books. Twelve shelves will have a total of 132 books. Since the number of shelves is x, the answer is 11x.
