Jane's office contains 12 file cabinets. Three cabinets have 4 drawers, all the other cabinets have 5 drawers. Jane is typing new labels for each file cabinet drawer. How many labels will she need?

Since 3 of the cabinets have 4 drawers, she will need 3 times 4, or 12 labels for those drawers.

 

The other 9 cabinets have 5 drawers.  She will need 9 times 5, or 45

labels for those drawers.

 

She will need a total 12 + 45, or 57 labels.
