Ken is replacing the ceiling tiles in the shcool hallway.  The hallway is 60 feet long and 8 feet wide.  Each ceiling tile is 4 feet long and 2 feet wide.  How many tiles does Ken need to complete the job?

The area of the hallway is 60 ft x 8 ft = 480 sq ft.

 

Each tile has an area of 4 ft x 2 ft = 8 sq ft.

 

The number of tiles needed is 480/8 = 60.

 

The tiles may be placed either as 15 rows of 4 tiles each or as 30 rows of 2 tiles each.

The area of the ceiling is the length times the width.

 

   Area of ceiling = 60 ft  • 4 ft = 240 ft² 

 

Each tile is 4 ft by 2 feet

 

   Area of tile = 4 ft • 2 ft = 8 ft²

 

To determine the number of tiles needed, divide the area of the ceiling by the area of 1 tile.

 

   240 ft² ÷ 8 ft² = 30

 

30 tiles are needed.
