SAT Math Problem (16)

In the United States, 55 million computers, 32 million televisions, and 150 million cellphones were either disposed of or recycled in the past year. If 30% of computers, 20% of televisions, and 10% of cellphones were recycled, and the average weight of a television is twice the average weight of a computer and 100 times the average weight of a cellphone, what is the approximate percentage by weigh of recycled electronics made up of cellphones?

Jason L.

Total recycled: 55C(.3) + 32t(.2) + 150p(.1) = 16.5c + 6.4t + 15p

t = 2c   => c = t/2
t = 100p => p = t/100

Make it all like terms now.

16.5(t/2) + 6.4t + 15(t/100) = 8.25t + 6.4t + .15t = 14.8t

So the cellphones make up .15/14.8 which is about 1%.
