Let x be one of the numbers, and let y be the one that is 5 more than 4 times the other, with both adding up to 35.
Then
x + y = 35
y = 5 + 4x
Just solve for x and y from the above 2 equations. Take y = 5 + 4x from the bottom equation, plug it into the top equation and get
x + (5 + 4x) = 35
5x = 30
x = 6
Then from the bottom equation, y = 5 + 4(6) = 29
Test the answers:
x + y = 6 + 29 = 35 (good)
5 + 4x = 5 + 4(6) = 29 = y (good)
